If you want to get published, you need to get an agent. Although there are examples of novelists who have managed to secure their first book deal by sending their work straight to a publisher, these remain the minority.

The fact is, if a publisher gets handed your work from an agent they are going to treat it more seriously than a manuscript that arrives unannounced. A friends novel was rejected by one publisher when it was sent directly to them, yet when their agent sent the same manuscript to the same publisher they wanted to sign her up!
